17,000 teachers and counting! It’s all systems go for Apprentus

More than two years have passed since Telenet Kickstart powered by Idealabs alumnus Apprentus wowed the jury with their online community for teachers and students, but Gaëtan Deremince, Marius Andra and Janne Harju are still as enthusiastic as ever. Telenet Kickstart caught up with co-founder and CEO Gaëtan, who filled us in on all the latest news and the lessons Apprentus learned on the path to success.

Apprentus: connecting tutors and students all over the world

Apprentus sets out to bring private tutors and students together in a matter of minutes. Teachers can advertise their classes on the platform for free, while students looking to learn a new language, play an instrument, improve their math skills, … can easily search for qualified teachers in their neighbourhood and get in touch with them in a flash. 17,000 teachers have joined Apprentus so far, so things are going great”, Gaëtan explains. “Most of our members are located in French-speaking countries, but we’re currently in the middle of hiring someone to help us tap the English market as well.”

The importance of user feedback

Gaëtan’s advice for other startups is not to underestimate the importance of user feedback: “At one point, the Telenet Kickstart powered by Idealabs mentors organized a focus group to put our platform to the test. That was a real eye-opener for us. You’d be amazed at how much a user’s experience can differ from your own. We took all the feedback we got that day to heart, and continue to optimize the user experience today. It’s one of those things that will always be a work in progress. And that’s how it should be.”

Stepping on the accelerator

As Apprentus becomes more and more profitable, their ambition continues to grow. Gaëtan: “We’re turning a profit and our product-market fit is excellent. Our main goal in 2017 is to attract more investors so we can accelerate our growth in new markets.”
